CANCELLED: The New Lute Café—Berget ~ Walker ~ Rukavina

Three Amigos.jpg

This concert has been cancelled in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Featuring Paul Berget, Thomas Walker, Jr., and Phillip Rukavina, lutes

This concert features a program of newly discovered lute trios by Jean Baptiste Besard (1567-1615).

Occasionally a discovery is made revealing a remarkable collection of music that hasn’t been performed since the music was composed. Such is the case with a set of lute trios collected by Jean Baptiste Besard in his Novus Partus, sive Concertationes Musicae (1617), containing approximately 60 solo and ensemble pieces, many of which were by Besard himself. The music is simply delightful and the arrangements are compelling.

Born in Besançon, Besard went on to Rome, where he studied music with the famous lutenist Lorenzino del Liuto (Lorenzo Tracetti). Music includes settings of famous tunes, like John Dowland’s Lachrimae pavan, the famous Italian tune “Il Ballo del Grand Duca” and several others.

Sponsored by SPCM, the New Lute Café usually takes place on the third Thursday of each month. Doors open at 7:00 and performances start at 7:30 pm. Performances last about an hour, sometimes a bit more.

There is no set charge for attending the performances, but a $15 per person donation is suggested to help defray costs and support our performers.
