The New Lute Café—La Cascade

Tom Walker, Jr.

Tom Walker, Jr.

Featuring Tom Walker, Jr, Baroque lute

Thomas Walker, Jr., features the music from the salons, courts, and chapels of Paris in the 17th century. Fortunately for us, you don’t need rarefied connections or exclusive invites to be privy to this decadent soundscape. The lute defined the French sound for at least a century, a sound that favored the most luxuriant suspensions, quirkily displaced rhythms, and generally prized subtly and ambiguity. The result is uncompromisingly beautiful, a beauty offered its acoustic equal in the Summit Center’s gorgeous performance hall. Take a couple hours and forget that outside it’s November, and hear preludes, pavanes, courantes, and chaconnes by the great lutenists of the age—Charles Mouton, Ennemond Gaultier, and Francois Dufault.

Sponsored by SPCM, the New Lute Café usually takes place on the third Thursday of each month. (Please note that November’s concert, however, is being held on the third Tuesday.) Doors open at 7:00 and performances start at 7:30 pm. Performances last about an hour, sometimes a bit more.

There is no set charge for attending the performances, but a $15 per person donation is suggested to help defray costs and support our performers.
