Stephanie Skor
Violin
Violinist Stephanie Skor is a graduate of the New England Conservatory where she studied with Nicholas Kitchen, first violinist of the Borromeo String Quartet. After graduating from NEC, Stephanie became in demand for her range as a violinist, performing in Boston for 15 years. A few years ago she returned to her hometown of St. Paul, launched a busy freelance career in the Twin Cities, and became a member of the Lux String Quartet. She is thrilled to now be joining the St. Paul Conservatory of Music!
Stephanie has enjoyed an eclectic performing career – from concertmaster at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival to a U.S. tour with Jethro Tull. With symphonic orchestras she has had the great pleasure of working with many inspiring conductors, including Osmo Vänskä. But her true focus has always been in chamber music.
Her wide-ranging work in chamber music has included collaborations with such artists as Kim Kashkashian, Paula Robison, Jorja Fleezanis, and the Pacifica Quartet. With Lux String Quartet, Stephanie has been featured in the Schubert Club Courtroom Concert Series, the Waverly Chamber Music Series, and the Lakes Chamber Music Society. For six seasons she was a member of the critically acclaimed Boston-based chamber orchestra Discovery Ensemble, founded by conductor Courtney Lewis. In addition to their regular concert schedule, Discovery Ensemble presented free concerts to thousands of school children in Boston, believing that classical music has a unique power to enrich young people’s lives.
Passionate about 20th century and contemporary music, Stephanie has worked with dozens of living composers, premiered over 25 new works, and has even recorded music for video games. She is a member of the Callithumpian Consort, ensemble-in-residence at the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice. Stephanie’s interest in unique projects has taken her to Las Vegas, New York City, the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato, México, and performances on WGBH, MPR, TPT, and Newstalk, a national radio station in Ireland.
Stephanie loves to teach, sharing her passion for music and the violin. She is faculty at the Colorado Chamber Music Institute and was twice an MPR Class Notes Artist. Throughout her career Stephanie has maintained a private violin studio. Infusing her Suzuki education with her extensive performance experience, she strives to build in her students not just excellent fundamentals, but a deep understanding of the music they are learning. Stephanie teaches the skills – and joys! – of performance, and believes in every student’s ability to communicate through music.
