SPCM Summer Music Camp Curriculum

All campers will begin the day in one of three choirs that's most appropriate for their age. Through the rest of the afternoon, campers will participate in various electives:

Campers entering 1st-3rd grades will be offered electives such as:

  • Beginning Cello: Learn with other beginners in this introductory class.

  • Beginning Piano: Learn with other beginners in this introductory class.

  • Beginning Violin: Learn with other beginners in this introductory class.

  • Drum Circle: Create music with xylophones, glockenspiels, and other rhythm instruments.

  • Instrument Sampler: Try a variety of instruments with other beginners in this introductory class.

  • Make and Play Your Own Instruments: Make, tune, and learn to play your own instruments using everyday materials.

  • Musicianship class: Learn the language that turns music into magic. Beginning musicians will learn the basics of note reading and rhythm through play and games.

  • Ukulele: Learn to strum songs with other beginners.

Campers entering 4th–6th grades will be offered electives such as:

  • Beginning Trombone: Learn with other beginners in this introductory class.

  • Broadway: Develop your singing and dancing skills by performing songs from Broadway musicals.

  • Chamber Music (minimum 2 years of private lessons): Develop musicality, leadership, and collaboration through making music together.

  • Instrument Sampler: Try a variety of instruments with other beginners in this introductory class.

  • Intro to Guitar: A first look at acoustic guitar, learning the strings, simple songs, and basic chords.

  • Music in Space and Time: Explore the diversity of music from around the globe and through the centuries!

  • Percussion Ensemble: Hands-on rhythm instruction develops music and ensemble skills.

  • Piano Masterclass (minimum 2 years of private lessons): Develop mastery and comfort with pieces you already know how to play.

  • Rock Ensemble: Try your hand at playing in a real life rock band. Learn the basics of classic rock composition.

  • Songwriting: Compose a short piece, working in groups and individually, to perform at the final concert.

  • Violin Masterclass (minimum 2 years of private lessons): Develop mastery and comfort with pieces you already know how to play.

  • Ukulele: Learn to strum basic chords. Some improvisation elements will also be incorporated.
