Sonata No. 1 in G minor for solo violin (transcribed for marimba)
Composed by J.S. Bach
A standard piece of the violin repertoire, parts of which are frequently performed on marimba, the whole sonata is rarely played on marimba. Matt looks forward to this being his first performance of the whole thing.
Tchik (for solo snare drum)
Composed by Nicolas Martynciow
This is a virtuoso monster for snare drum; in addition to traditional playing methods with snare drum sticks, there are lots of added instructions (play with brushes, timpani mallets, fingers, vocalizations, different playing zones on the head) that turn a single drum into an entire symphony of textures.
Mirage for Marimba
Composed by Yasuo Sueyoshi
This is a great example of some of the wonderful music written for marimba virtuoso Keiko Abe in Japan in the 1960's and 70's. It sounds modern in its harmonic language but is cinematic in its scope; the way it changes moods and textures, and consistently uses motifs in different forms, is much like the Fugue from the Bach Sonata.
Warm It Up
Composed by Thomas Osborne
Written for Matt when he and Tom were both graduate students at Rice University in Houston. Matt was working on a different piece at that time, for seven drums, and Tom used the same set-up when writing Warm It Up. Tom finished writing the piece while on heavy medication for the flu, which he credits for some of the more unorthodox things that happen.
