The Music of Tierra Caliente: A Suzuki Workshop & Master Class

el_palillo.JPG

SPCM’s Suzuki program is pleased to present special guest Kat Fritz (violin & viola) leading a workshop and master class for students who play violin, viola, cello, bass, and guitar.

Kat learned the music of Tierra Caliente, Mexico, when she traveled there to study with renowned fiddler Juan Reynoso. The region’s traditional music, with a unique tonal and rhythmic makeup, includes tunes with lyrics as well as compositions without words that are intended to accompany dancers.

The music of Tierra Caliente is naturally engaging, but Kat will deepen participants’ appreciation by exploring the history of the music and showing videos of the musicians of Tierra Caliente performing.

Please note: this music is best suited for intermediate to advanced players, whether Suzuki-trained or not. Younger students are welcome to observe this workshop and will be invited to share their thoughts about the music or to keep a beat on a percussion instrument.

Instructor Bio: Kat Fritz has been joyfully teaching violin and viola students for twenty years using the Suzuki method. She is a world music enthusiast and has studied with master musicians from around the globe as part of the quest to preserve traditional folk music styles. She is President of the Suzuki Association of Colorado and resides in Boulder, Colorado.
