Style Brisé: The New Lute Café

Thomas Walker, Jr.

Thomas Walker, Jr.

Please join us for the second New Lute Café concert of the 2018-19 season, featuring Tom Walker Jr., Baroque Lute.

Twin Cities lutenist Tom Walker presents a program of 17th century solo music for French Lute. In the 17th century French lutenists, working mostly in Paris, were pioneering a new style of composition attuned to the natural sonorities of the lute, and also reflecting the shift from the contrapuntal style of the Renaissance to the more clearly chordal fashion of the Baroque.

Thomas Walker, Jr., will perform the early music of Ennemond Gaultier, who later emerged as the leading light of the French style, Michelagnolo Galilei's "Sonate," which masterfully blends Italianate toccatas with French dances, as well as other early pioneers Antoine Francisque, Nicolas Vallet, and Robert Ballard.
