Getting Started with Lessons

New to the SPCM? Welcome!

We’re happy you are considering us for your music education. New students (and returning students wanting to study a different instrument/genre, or with a different instructor) receive a trial lesson. Request your FREE trial lesson here.

At your trial lesson, be ready to meet one of the SPCM’s fabulous faculty members, learn more about our philosophy - music for all! - and start (or continue!) your musical journey.

How to Get Started

  1. Create your account in our Registration Portal.

  2. Fill out our Trial Lesson Request form. Be as thorough as possible; please let us know anything specific you’re looking for in an instructor, special scheduling requests, etc.

  3. Look for an email from The Registration Department (registration@thespcm.org) with scheduling details.

The SPCM offers instruction:

  • For students of all ages and abilities

  • In-person, virtual, or hybrid

Frequently Asked Questions About Trial Lessons:

  • Trial lessons are 30 minutes long.

  • Be prepared to meet your faculty member and make some music!

Your instructor will guide you through a brief sample lesson, including warm-up, exercises, and/or a piece of music. Instructors use this time to get a sense of your level, and learn about you as a musician. You can use the time to get to know your instructor’s teaching style.

Feel free to ask questions, and let your instructor know if there is anything specific you would like to work on. You may bring any music you are working on or would like to work on. We want to know your goals, and what you are hoping to get out of music lessons!

  • Yes, please bring your instrument if you are able. There are a few exceptions to this rule: Pianists DO NOT need to bring an instrument.

If you need guidance to find an instrument, or if your current instrument needs tuning or repair, please let us know in your trial lesson request. The SPCM does not offer instrument repair, but we are happy to help you find resources that may help.

  • The SPCM operates out of several locations for lessons and classes. The Registration Department will confirm your lesson location when they confirm your lesson date ad time. Please view our Contact page for details and addresses, and reach out with any questions: registration@thespcm.org

  • At the SPCM, we know that the right fit between a student and their instructor is crucial. The Registration Department takes the time to match students with a faculty member whom we believe will be a fantastic match for your needs, taking into account a student’s age and level, scheduling requirements, which of our locations may be most convenient, and any special requests or additional information you provide on your trial lesson scheduling request.

We take pride in our diverse and talented faculty (read more about them here!), and we know that we will be able to match you with someone who can help you get the most out of your lessons.
